We picked our newest addition up at Dean Hill Kikos in Pleasant Shade, TN. We named her Penny and we couldn't be more excited about this little girl! She is an Akbash, a livestock guardian dog ( or LGD) that originates from western Turkey. Both her parents are "working dogs" on Charles and Sherri's farm.
It is always such a pleasure to see these magnificent animals guarding their flocks! LGD's stay with the group of animals they protect as a full-time member of the flock or herd. Their ability to guard their herd is mainly instinctive, as they are bonded to the herd at a very young age and view them as family.
Penny is all puppy, chewing and playing and sleeping and generally just charming us with her soft ears and inquisitive face. She has a long way to go before she can be relied on to guard her sheep. My biggest challenge is to not make her into my pet! She fits perfectly with our other LGD's, Sam ( a Maremma dog) and Thistle ( a Pyrenees), and they are showing her the ropes of sheep life.
I'm already making some future plans for Penny and Sam...... ( I guess I have plenty of time to see how THEY feel about that). :)
